If you’re into golf, you might be into sport in general. So, this section gives you a bit more detail about sports in Northern Ireland that you might like to see, learn more about or connect into whilst you’re here. With a population of only 1.8 million people, that’s just smaller than the city of Houston, Texas to put it in perspective, we’re proud to have punched above our weight on the world’s sports stage. George Best, one of the greatest football (soccer) players ever, our golfers Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Graham McDowell, boxers Barry McGuigan and currently Paddy Barnes and Carl Frampton, Alex Higgins and Dennis Taylor in snooker, Tony McCoy horse racing, Willie John McBride and Rory Best in rugby, Dame Mary Peters in athletics … and not forgetting recently our Northern Ireland football team making a name for itself at the Euros with people around the world singing about setting Will Greig on fire! The funny thing is that Will is one of the shyest, most humble people you’ll meet and found it extremely embarrassing – especially when Hummels knocked on the dressing room door after the match and asked to swap shirts with him as his was one of the most coverted shirts of the tournament. And he never played! Locally we also have GAA (Gaelic football and hurling/shinty), unique to Ireland and well worth a visit to some of the local grounds and clubs if you’re passing. You’d be made most welcome! As it’s summer there aren’t many sports events on, but we’ll find anything that’s on whilst you’re here and post it below.
